Our lives drastically changed when our son was diagnosed with a life-threatening food allergy to milk protein. However, after the initial shock we educated ourselves on how to properly avoid potential threats and decided that we wouldn’t let it slow us down. Although we were diligent in avoiding dairy proteins, our son was still having reactive episodes to some foods. This led us down a winding path of trying do determine what was safe and what was unsafe for him to eat. We learned along the way that he was also allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, but even with all of those removed from our home he still occasionally had problems. Our allergist and a nutritionist both advised us to take detailed notes on EVERYTHING he came in contact with. This became second nature for parents who are a former engineer and a research biologist and thus the inspiration for our Food Allergy Journal was formed.
In the early days of trying to figure out all of the allergy triggers, the journal (actually, the first and much less glamorous prototype) was invaluable at providing information to our allergist on what to look for as well as helping us find several groups of food to avoid. It has also helped assuage the fears that a developing child on a non-traditional diet is getting the nutrition he needs.
When our doctors saw what we had put together, one remarked “that is certainly better than seeing random notes on napkins- I’d love to offer these to newly diagnosed patients. It would be incredibly helpful!”
The “real” version of our prototype Food Allergy Journal is now available in our online store! Crafted of durable chipboard, it fits perfectly in a purse or bag and opens flat for easy use.
Dealing with newly diagnosed food allergies can be a daunting task, but we believe that products such as this can help parents a little more control of the situation and meet obstacles head on. It has allowed us to focus on what we CAN do and come up with some pretty great recipes along the way. This product comes straight from our hearts and we hope that you love it as much as we do.
